Inconel 783 (Alloy 783, UNS R30783) forged parts – custom forgings manufactured by Jiangsu Liangyi China

What Is Inconel 783 (Alloy 783 / UNS R30783)?

Inconel 783 — also known as Alloy 783 and named UNS R30783 per the Unified Numbering System — is a precipitation-hardenable nickel-cobalt-iron (Ni-Co-Fe) superalloy originally developed by Special Metals Corporation (now part of Precision Castparts Corp.). Its main characteristic is a low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE ≈ 7.5 µm/m·°C) from room temperature to 649°C (1200°F), high strength and good oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.

The alloy is accordance with ASTM B905 and AMS 5839 standards. It is mainly used for gas turbine clearance control parts, aerospace structural rings, high-temperature valve parts, and any other industries which has high requirement in size stability under thermal cycling.

What is Inconel 783 ? What makes it unique?

Inconel 783 (Alloy 783 / UNS R30783) is a precipitation-hardenable cobalt-nickel-iron (Co-Ni-Fe)-based superalloy. Its feature is its extremely low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE ≈ 7.5 µm/m·°C) — a value far lower than that of most nickel superalloys — while also having a tensile strength of about 1194 MPa and oxidation resistance up to 649°C (1200°F). It is just because of this unique characteristic that it has become the best material for the clearance control parts of gas turbines. In these industries, maintaining the tightness of the tip clearance over a wide temperature range is crucial to make sure the working efficiency of the engine.

What are the differences between Inconel 783 and Inconel 718?

The main differences between Inconel 783 (UNS R30783) and Inconel 718 (UNS N07718) as following:

  • Thermal Expansion (CTE): Inconel 783 ~7.5 µm/m·°C vs Inconel 718 ~13 µm/m·°C — Alloy 783 has ~40% lower CTE, making it best choice for clearance control uses
  • Tensile Strength: Inconel 718 (~1380 MPa) is stronger than Inconel 783 (~1194 MPa) at room temperature
  • Base System: Alloy 783 is Co-Ni-Fe based; Alloy 718 is Ni-Fe-Cr based
  • Uses: Alloy 783 for gas turbine tip clearance, seals, casings; Alloy 718 for general aerospace structural and engine parts

Choose Inconel 783 when size stability under thermal cycling is the main requirement. Choose Inconel 718 for maximum strength-to-weight in general aerospace structures.

Is Inconel 783 the same as Alloy 783 and UNS R30783?

Yes — Inconel 783, Alloy 783, and UNS R30783 all refer to the same cobalt-nickel-iron superalloy:

  • Inconel 783 = trade name used by Special Metals / Huntington Alloys
  • Alloy 783 = generic common industry name
  • UNS R30783 = Unified Numbering System (UNS) name per SAE / ASTM
  • R30783 = abbreviated UNS number used in procurement specifications

All four names are interchangeable for material specification purposes under ASTM B905 and AMS 5839.

Does Jiangsu Liangyi accept small batch or prototype Inconel 783 forging orders?

Yes. Jiangsu Liangyi welcomes prototype, qualification, and small-batch orders with a minimum order quantity of 1 piece. We support aerospace and energy customers through their R&D, design checking, and qualification testing programs. There is no minimum order value for initial samples. Submit your drawing and technical manuals via our inquiry form or email [email protected] for a prompt quotation.

Can Jiangsu Liangyi provide Inconel 783 forgings inspected by a third-party?

Yes. Jiangsu Liangyi supports the third-party inspection by inspection agencies including Bureau Veritas (BV), SGS, TÜV Rheinland, Intertek, and Lloyd's Register. Third-party inspection will include size check, documentation review, and final release certification. Please specify your third-party inspection requirements in your inquiry.

What are the difficulties and limitations of forging Inconel 783?

Due to its high alloy content, the forging of Inconel 783 (UNS R30783) faces many challenges:

  • Narrow forging temperature window: The temperature needs to be strictly controlled to avoid the initial melting of the aluminum-rich phase.
  • High flow stress: Heavy forging equipment is required (Jiangsu Liangyi has presses with a capacity of up to 20,000 tons).
  • High Aluminum content: During the heat treatment process, a protective atmosphere or strictly controlled atmosphere is required to prevent surface oxidation and aluminum loss.
  • NDT sensitivity: Full ultrasonic testing and surface non-destructive testing are required, especially in the aerospace field.

Jiangsu Liangyi's experienced forging engineers have developed great forging and heat treatment ways for Alloy 783 that consistently meet AMS 5839 property requirements.
