AISI 6150 vs 4140 vs 5150: When to Choose 6150

AISI 6150 is often used in extrem conditions needing a stronger balance of wear resistance, fatigue resistance and toughness than common medium-alloy alternatives. Buyers always compare AISI 6150 with AISI 4140 and AISI 5150  when they select materials.

GradeMain alloy featureTypical strength / wear profileTypical use decision
AISI 6150Chromium + vanadiumHigh toughness, good fatigue resistance and strong wear performance after heat treatmentChoose for shafts, gear-related parts, springs, impact-loaded and wear-loaded forged components
AISI 4140Chromium + molybdenumVery versatile with good strength and machinabilityChoose when broad availability and general-purpose performance are the priority
AISI 5150Chromium steel without the same vanadium emphasisGood hardenability but generally lower grain-refinement benefit than 6150Choose when the application does not require the extra wear and fatigue advantage of 6150

Simple selection rule:If your forged parts operate under repeated shock, wear or cyclic loading, AISI 6150 is usually a better choice than AISI 5150.

It is also often selected as an upgraded material over general‑purpose AISI 4140.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About AISI 6150 Forgings

AISI 6150 (UNS G61500) is a chromium-vanadium alloy steel, similar to  50CrV4 (EN 10083-3), 50CrVA (GB/T 3077), and SUP10 (JIS G4801). It is often compared with AISI 4140, but its higher carbon and vanadium content provide better resistance and toughness.

We can produce custom AISI 6150 forgings weighing from 30KG to 30000KG.  We can make seamless rolled rings with the maximum outer diameter up to 5 meters, and we can make forged bars with the maximum length up to 12 meters and diameters from 50mm to 1200mm. We can make any size, shape, or specification  based on clients requirements.

The hardness of AISI 6150 can be fully customized  to meet clients requirements. The hardness usually ranges from 28 HRC to 55 HRC after quenching and tempering. It can be changed up to 58 HRC for high-wear applications, while for high-toughness applications, it can be adjusted to 25-32 HRC. The normal as-annealed hardness is 260 HB (approximately 26 HRC).

Our AISI 6150 forgings strictly meet international standards including ASTM A29/A29M, EN 10083-3, DIN 17200, ISO 683-1 and API 6A . They also meet industry-specific standards for gear applications (ISO 6336-5, DIN 3990-5) and pressure vessel applications. All products are fully inspected to meet these standards before delivery.

We could deliver goods to all international sea ports in shipping terms like FOB Shanghai, CIF, EXW and DDP. Sea freight, air freight and express delivery(DHL,FedEx and UPS) are available according to clients requirements.

The main difference between AISI 6150 and AISI 5150 is their vanadium content. AISI 6150 contains a minimum of 0.15% vanadium, which improves grain refinement, hardenability, high-temperature strength, and wear resistance compared to AISI 5150. AISI 6150 has better impact toughness and fatigue strength, making it a better choice for heavy-duty, high-load applications that need long lifetime in harsh working environments.
