31CrMoV9 is a high-quality alloyed quenched and tempered (QT) nitriding steel, with good mechanical properties, great nitriding performance, high wear resistance, good hardenability and temper resistance. It is the best choice for high-load, wear-resistant and long-life industrial parts.

Main Material Advantages

  • Good Nitriding Performance: After gas or plasma nitriding treatment, it will have ultra-high hardness surface (up to 60-62 HRC) and good wear resistance, scuffing resistance and fatigue resistance, which is better than ordinary alloy steels like 42CrMo4.
  • Great Harden ability & Temper Resistance: we add chromium, molybdenum and vanadium elements to improve the harden ability of the steel, which make sure all parts have uniform hardness and microstructure after heat treatment for large-section parts, and greatly reduces the sensitivity to temper embrittlement.
  • Good Strength & Toughness Combination: After quenching and tempering (QT) treatment, it gets a good balance of ultra-high strength, good impact toughness and good plasticity, well suitable for heavy-duty impact working conditions and alternating load environments.

Heat Treatment Methods for 31CrMoV9 Forged Parts

We offer professional heat treatment methods for 31CrMoV9 forgings, including annealing, quenching and tempering (QT), stress relief, nitriding, etc., to get the required mechanical properties and microstructure.

  • Soft Annealing: Heat to 680°C - 720°C, hold for sufficient time, and then cool slowly in the furnace. Annealing hardness ≤248 HB, fully eliminating internal stress and improving machinability.
  • Quenching & Hardening: Austenitizing is carried out at 840℃- 880℃. According to the thickness of the cross-section, it is held for a sufficient period of time, and then oil quenching or polymer quenching is carried out to get a uniform and fine martensitic structure.
  • Tempering: Tempering at 570°C - 680°C according to the mechanical properties, holding for enough time, cooling by air . Adjust the strength, hardness and toughness matching to meet your project's working condition.
  • Stress Relieving: Heating to 550°C - 580°C, holding for enough time, followed by slow cooling. Reduce the residual stress generated during forging and machining and the risk of deformation in next production process.
  • Nitriding Treatment: Professional gas nitriding or plasma nitriding service is available, to get a high-hardness nitrided layer on the surface of the parts, significantly improve surface hardness, wear resistance and fatigue life of the parts.

Great Steel Making Process

  • Primary melting: High-quality scrap steel as raw material, smelted by advanced Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) + Ladle Refining Furnace (LF), to get correct control of chemical composition, ensure composition uniformity and stability.
  • Vacuum Degassing (VD/RH): Full vacuum degassing treatment, to effectively reduce the content of harmful gases (hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen) and non-metallic inclusions in the steel, improve material purity, toughness and fatigue resistance.
  • Continuous casting or ingot casting: Strictly controlled casting process, optimized cooling parameters, to avoid segregation, porosity, shrinkage cavity and other internal defects, ensure the internal quality of the steel billet/ingot.
  • Forging Process: Multiple upsetting and stretching processes, with a forging ratio ≥ 3:1, to fully break the cast structure, refine the grain, improve the internal density and anisotropy of the material, and greatly improve the mechanical properties.
  • Full Traceability Management: Each batch of material has a heat number and a complete mill test report, so that they are full traceable from steel mill to finished product. All inspection records are kept for more than 10 years.
