🔬 Technical Expert Note

Based on 25+ years of manufacturing 16Mo3 forgings for European pressure vessel, our metallurgical team recommends specifying EN 10222-2 forging grade with full vacuum degassing when wall thickness exceeds 100mm — this significantly improves UT inspection pass rates and reduces the risk of hydrogen-induced cracking in heavy section forgings during post-weld heat treatment.

Heat Treatment for Forged parts

All our 1.5415 (16Mo3) forgings receive standardized heat treatment to ensure good mechanical properties. They are normalized at 900–940°C with controlled cooling. Optional tempering at 600–650°C is available to meet your required strength and toughness. The whole treatment records are provided for every batch.

Frequently Asked Questions About 1.5415 (16Mo3, 15Mo3) Forgings

16Mo3 (also known as 1.5415 and 15Mo3) is a weldable, creep-resistant alloy steel mainly used for parts that work at elevated temperatures and pressures. It is used on steam boilers, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, oil and gas wellhead equipment, chemical processing reactors and power generation plant parts.

15Mo3 and 16Mo3 are both European standard elevated-temperature steels with very similar chemical composition and mechanical properties. They are different in the carbon content. 16Mo3 has a slightly higher minimum carbon content of 0.12–0.20% compared to 15Mo3, so it has higher strength at elevated temperature. The two grades are interchangeable for most pressure vessel and boiler uses.We produce forgings for both materials to the same high quality standards.

16Mo3 steel can work well at temperatures up to 480°C, with verified mechanical properties up to 500°C. It has stable creep resistance and structural stability during long-term high-temperature operation. This makes it an industry standard for medium-temperature pressure vessel uses.

16Mo3 steel meets European EN standards, including:EN 100282 (flat products for pressure purposes)EN 102222 (steel forgings for pressure purposes)EN 102162 (seamless steel tubes for pressure purposes)EN 10273 (hot rolled bars for pressure purposes)All our 16Mo3 forgings fully meet these standards.

16Mo3 steel has many international equivalent material grades, such as ASTM A204 Grade B (US standard), 15Mo3 (German DIN standard), and 16Mo3 (BS EN standard for the UK market). Although these grades have small differences in chemical composition ranges, they have similar mechanical properties and are widely used for high-temperature pressure vessel. We can make forgings that can meet all these equivalent international standards.

We can provide 1.5415 (16Mo3, 15Mo3) steel, from raw steel melting, open die forging, seamless ring rolling, heat treatment, to precision CNC machining and final testing. All parts are made according to your drawings, technical manuals and required international standards. We can produce single parts from 30KGS up to 30,000KGS and we can support both one piece sample order and large volume mass production orders

We provide full EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates for all 16Mo3 (1.5415) forgings as standard, with EN 10204 3.2 third-party inspected certificates available on request. Our factory is an ISO 9001:2015-certified manufacturer, and our products meet European EN standards, API 6A standards for oil and gas uses, and CE marking requirements for the European market.

16Mo3 steel has good weldability, it can be operated with common welding methods including SMAW, GMAW, SAW and TIG. Preheating to 150-250°C is needed for thicker sections (over 15mm) to prevent cold cracking.Post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) at 580-620°C is needed for pressure vessel parts to relieve residual stress and restore creep resistance. All our 16Mo3 forgings are supplied with weldability test data on request.

After standard normalizing heat treatment (900–940°C), 16Mo3 (1.5415) steel typically has a Brinell hardness of 130–180 HBW.Following optional tempering at 600–650°C, hardness is always in the range of 130–160 HBW.These values show that the material has good machinability for precision CNC finishing.

Lead time depends on our clients drawing size and quantity. The normal lead times are: small parts (under 200 kg) — 15–25 days; normal size of parts (200–2,000 kg) — 20–35 days; large parts (over 2,000 kg) — 30–50 days, which include steel procurement, forging, heat treatment, machining, NDT inspection and certification. Urgent orders with short production times are also acceptable for us. Contact our team for the delivery schedule.

16Mo3 (1.5415) steel can be used in moderate hydrogen service environments after heat treatment and hardness control. To be used in sour gas (H ₂ S-containing) environments, the material must meet NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 requirements, including a maximum hardness limit of 22 HRC (237 HBW).Our 16Mo3 forgings can be produced and tested to meet your specific project specification. The higher-alloy grades are a good choice for highly aggressive sour service. Our team can give clients good advice on the best material selection.

We accept single-piece prototype orders through to large-batch mass production orders, but there may be additional costs for very small orders (1–5 pieces). Please contact our sales team for a quote. We support both R&D sampling and full-scale industrial production based on the same strict quality standards to every order.
