AISI 4150 has many international grades, including: European Standard EN 1.7228 (50CrMo4), German Standard DIN 50CrMo4, Japanese Standard JIS SCM450, British Standard BS 50CrMo4, French Standard NF 50CrMo4, and Chinese Standard GB 50CrMo.All grade forgings can be produced per your requirements.
AISI 4150 (also known as SAE 4150, UNS G41500, or EN 50CrMo4) is a medium-carbon chromium-molybdenum (Cr-Mo) alloy steel containing 0.48–0.53% carbon, 0.80–1.10% chromium, and 0.15–0.25% molybdenum. After quenching and tempering heat treatment, AISI 4150 steel will have a tensile strength of 1100–1300 MPa, its yield strength ≥900 MPa, and Brinell hardness HB 331–380. These properties make it can be used for high-load, high-torque, wear-resistant forged parts such as gear shafts, rings, spindles, and crusher parts requiring long life cycle under bad operating conditions.
AISI 4150 and AISI 4140 are both chromium-molybdenum alloy steels, but 4150 has a higher carbon content (0.48–0.53% vs. 0.38–0.43% for 4140), and it will cause 4150 has higher tensile strength, hardness, and wear resistance after heat treatment.AISI 4150 is better for heavier-duty uses that need maximum strength and hardness, such as large gear shafts, crusher spindles, and heavy transmission parts.AISI 4140 is better for slight machinability and toughness for medium-duty uses. We manufacture forged parts in both grades , and we can provide suggestions on the choice for your specific use.]
To get a free quote for custom AISI 4150 forgings, you can email [email protected] or call us on WhatsApp at +86-13585067993.Please give: (1) the type of material needed (AISI 4150, SAE 4150, or something similar), (2) the type of product and how it will be used, (3) the size, drawings or sketches (PDF/DWG/STEP), and (4) the mechanical properties and heat treatment condition.(5) quantity and delivery date. Our technical and sales team will respond within 24 hours with a detailed technical and commercial proposal.
The recommended hot forging temperature range for AISI 4150 alloy steel is 1,100°C – 1,250°C (2,012°F – 2,282°F). The minimum forging finish temperature should be maintained above 850°C (1,562°F) to avoid excessive work hardening and potential cracking. After forging, controlled slow cooling is required to prevent thermal stress. Our forging engineers control heating uniformity and forging temperature at every stage to ensure grain refinement and mechanical properties in the finished forging.
All AISI 4150 forged parts will have comprehensive non-destructive testing (NDT) before delivery.Standard NDT include: (1) Ultrasonic Testing (UT) per EN 10228-3 / ASTM A388 — detecting internal defects including porosity, cracks, segregation and inclusions throughout the full volume;(2) Magnetic Particle Inspection (MT) per EN 10228-1 / ASTM E709 — detecting surface and near-surface linear defects. We can also do other testing which includes: Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT), Hardness Mapping, and Residual Stress Measurement. All NDT results are recorded in the EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificate, including probe specifications, sensitivity settings, and inspection area sketches.
AISI 4150 steel has limited weldability due to its higher carbon content (0.48–0.53%) and Carbon Equivalent (CE) value, which is typically 0.80–0.95.Direct welding without precautions risks heat-affected zone (HAZ) cracking. When welding is required, the following precautions are mandatory: (1) Pre-heat to 250–350°C before welding; (2) Use low-hydrogen electrodes (E9018-D1 or equivalent); (3) Maintain interpass temperature above 200°C; (4) Post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) at 550–620°C stress relief is recommended. For heavy industrial uses, Jiangsu Liangyi recommends using AISI 4140 (42CrMo4) as a better alternative if weldability is a main requirement.
