About AISI 314 Stainless Steel (UNS S31400 / DIN 1.4841)

AISI 314 is an austenitic stainless steel with a high alloy content of chromium, nickel and silicon and is especially designed for extreme high temperature applications. In North America this grade is known as UNS S31400 and in Europe as DIN 1.4841. The unique chemical composition of this grade gives it an excellent oxidation resistance and creep strength at elevated temperatures for the material of choice for heavily loaded parts of equipment working in harsh thermal environments. What is the difference between AISI 314 and AISI 310S?

AISI 314 has a higher silicon content ranging from 1.5% to 3%, compared with no more than 1.5% for AISI 310S. This higher silicon level greatly improves its ability to resist oxidation at high temperatures. AISI 314 can work steadily at a continuous temperature up to 1150°C, while AISI 310S can only endure up to 1095°C. AISI 314 also delivers better creep strength when the temperature exceeds 600°C, so it is the preferred material for ultra high-temperature working conditions in the oil and gas as well as power generation industries.
